As surgeons we are trained to focus on indications, technique, and complications. Cancer surgery introduces the reality that no two presentations of the primary mass are identical, results of tumor staging differ, prognosis can be unpredictable, and understanding where surgery fits into the holistic patient approach (incorporating finance, owner expectations and surgeon skill) takes time and experience. All our best intentions are at the mercy of cancer biology, and this session asks experienced surgical oncologists to illustrate how they pre-empt, respond, and sometimes surrender to this reality in commonly encountered cancers.
