Dr. Clary is a board-certified veterinary surgeon and PhD bioethicist. He holds a DVM degree from Kansas State University and trained in small animal surgery with internship at the University of Georgia and residency at North Carolina State University.
Post-residency, Dr. Clary was recruited to Duke University Medical Center where he served for many years as a researcher working in the field of minimally invasive surgery. Concurrent with the work at Duke, he founded a mobile veterinary surgical practice that operated in Raleigh-Durham, NC, for over 20 years until his departure in early 2018 to join the faculty at Oklahoma State University where he served as Associate Professor of Surgery and Bioethics.
Erik presently serves in the greater Nashville area as a mobile veterinary surgeon with Tennessee Veterinary Surgical Specialists. Veterinary academic service continues through locum teaching opportunities. His work in the field of bioethics also continues with independent consulting, periodic lectures, and publications. His most recent publication effort is a forthcoming book chapter addressing the persistent vegetative state in the context of human end-of-life medical decision-making.
