Dr. Kinney is the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Director of Veterinary Services at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. He received his bachelor’s and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from the University of Wisconsin, completed a small animal rotating internship in South Florida, and residency training in zoological medicine through the University of California, Davis and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. He is a board-certified specialist in zoological medicine through the American College of Zoological Medicine.
Dr. Kinney has diverse clinical interests which include megavertebrate anesthesia and surgery, infectious disease management in zoological species, minimally invasive surgery, advanced diagnostic imaging, and anything related to pelicans. Over the past decade he has worked to advance minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical techniques in zoological species and enjoys teaching these techniques to other veterinarians. His interest in diagnostic imaging continue to expand with a strong focus on computed tomography. These interests have provided him an opportunity to work with multiple institutions on a collaborative project to provide reference studies for many zoological species and write extensively on this topic. He enjoys mentorship and leads the grant supported veterinary mentor training program at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance which aims to promote accessibility and expansion of training opportunities for veterinary students and recent graduates.
