After initial veterinary training at the University of Cambridge, Dr. Matthew pursued a PhD at Cambridge, and then a post-doctoral fellowship at University of Purdue in comparative orthopedics. This research training provided expertise in the development and optimization of preclinical animal models for orthopedic conditions. After moving to SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, Dr. Matthew held joint appointments in the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Neuroscience & Physiology, and Laboratory Animal Resources. In 12 years at Syracuse, Dr. Matthew mentored a number of graduate students and orthopedic residents pursuing thesis research. Dr. Matthew joined The Ohio State University (OSU) in March 2008 and directed the Surgical Research Laboratory at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine. At OSU, Dr. Matthew served as the research mentor for two PhD students, nine veterinary surgical residents, and six surgical Fellows. Dr. Matthew also established a clinical total knee replacement program in the Veterinary Medical Centre, and 2014 was elected Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Matthew’s current research, performed in the newly established Surgical Discovery Centre, involves a mixture of preclinical and clinical research in the areas of total joint replacement, spine surgery, and image-guided and robotic surgery.
