Dr. Williams is a Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah, CSO of two companies—Purgo Scientific and Vetlen Advanced Veterinary Devices—and VP Microbiology and New Technologies at Curza Global. He received a BS of Microbiology from Weber State University, and PhD of Biomedical Engineering from the University of Utah. Dr. Williams’ research portfolio is broad and includes mitigating biofilm implant-related infections such as those that affect open fractures, developing medical devices and technologies to address these infections, investigating bone pathologies such as heterotopic ossification, and developing relevant animal models of these paradigms. Over the past twelve years, he has been awarded $25M in DoD and other funding and credits this funding for catalyzing technologies that have significant potential to improve patient care for injured Service Members and civilians. He was part of the team that developed osseointegrated implant technology for transfemoral amputees. These implants are now surgically placed in 2-3 patients per month at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Williams’ most recently advanced technology, the Purgo Pouch, received Breakthrough Device Designation by the FDA in November 2023. He and his team were recently awarded $9M in DoD funding to support continued development and an IDE submission to perform a first-in-human/early feasibility study. The veterinary version of the Purgo Pouch, the Vetlen Pouch, is currently being used in dogs and horses, where it is already healing wounds that were once untreatable. Dr. Williams enjoys writing Sci-Fi action novels, movie scripts, exercising, and spending time with his family in his spare time.
