Coaching and Mentoring: Developing You and Developing Others

As veterinary surgical residents, we had likely spent little time thinking about our life-long career much beyond getting through the program, board exams, and landing that first job. Now as veterinary surgeons, we might still not have thought much about beyond getting the CE we need to maintain certification and asking our employers for the latest equipment. Many of us have begun to realize that having life-long career satisfaction comes with intention and involves building a network of people that can support you, others that you can help develop, and assist you and others in learning new skills — surgical or otherwise — to help you succeed. This seminar explores the concepts of mentoring, coaching, team and self-leadership, and where each may support you and your workplace to thrive as individuals, surgeons, and above all, human beings! Our goal is to give you practical guidance on how to incorporate what you might need to create a fulfilling career for yourself and the others you wish to support in doing so.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the difference and the overlap between coaching, mentoring, counseling, and managing
  • Examine what leadership in medicine means and the skills needed to improve as a leader, a coach, and a mentor and review the principles and dynamics of teams and what does it mean to coach, manage, or lead a team
  • Discuss with experts mentoring programs in both academic and private practice veterinary surgical practices and answer your questions about mentoring, coaching, and managing others
