Small animal orthopedics have seen numerous advances since I graduated veterinary school in 1983. Diagnostic and planning capabilities, implant systems and instrumentation as well as surgical approaches and techniques have evolved considerably over the past 4 decades. This lecture reviews advances made in musculoskeletal traumatology, reconstructive orthopedic surgery and minimally invasive fracture management with a focus on the utilization of circular and hybrid external skeletal fixation for fracture stabilization, deformity correction and limb salvage procedures. Innovations in the application of virtual surgical planning and 3D printing in addressing complex orthopedic procedures will also be discussed. Perspectives into advances on the horizon will also be offered. In addition, issues facing our College regarding research, advanced surgical training and academic clinical practice is discussed.
