This lecture reviews our current understanding of the use of antimicrobials for prophylaxis and treatment of horses undergoing colic surgery. It includes indications and guidelines for perioperative antimicrobial use in horses and other species, as well as findings from studies specific to horses undergoing colic surgery. The lecture also addresses potential negative effects of antimicrobials and emphasizes the importance of antimicrobial stewardship.
