Seminar: From Joint Injections, Including Orthobiologics, to Navigating Canine Athlete Care at the Agility World Championships and the Iditarod in the Alaskan Wilderness at −40°F
This lecture explores the safety and rational of therapeutic joint injections (TJIs) in dogs. A strong understanding of their intraarticular (IA) pharmacokinetics and clinical efficacy helps in appropriate product selection. Attendees discuss three traditional injectates: corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid products, and local anesthetics. What is the expected clinical efficacy (degree and duration of effect)? What are common adverse effects? How long do the products exist within the joint after administration and how does this differ from other routes of application? Is there variability within a product class? What are the considerations for combining or staging various injectates? Are injectate effects truly localized? This lecture transitions into orthobiologic use as both IA injectate or for other musculoskeletal conditions in the subsequent lecture.
