This lecture discusses the anesthetic management of small animal patients undergoing minimally invasive surgical procedures, including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. While minimally invasive surgery offers several benefits, such as decreased procedural pain and shorter recovery times compared to open procedures, there are also potential complicating factors that the anesthetist must consider. In addition to the effects of the underlying disease processes, insufflating gas into a body cavity can significantly influence physiological functions. The lecture will cover the respiratory and cardiovascular effects of creating a pneumoperitoneum or pneumothorax.
