Dr. von Pfeil graduated from the Free University Berlin (Germany; Dr. med. vet.) in 2001. Subsequently, he completed an internship at Kansas State University (KSU), pursued the American DVM, and engaged in a fellowship and surgery residency at Michigan State University (MSU). By 2008, he achieved Diplomate status with both the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. von Pfeil's specialization in sports medicine, particularly with sled dogs, led to additional board certifications in 2016 with the ACVSMR and in 2021 with the ECVSMR. Recognizing his significant contributions to minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, Dr. von Pfeil was designated an ACVS Founding Fellow, Minimally Invasive Surgery (Small Animal Orthopedics) in 2021.
From 2006 to 2024, Dr. von Pfeil held various academic and surgical positions, serving as an assistant professor at KSU, adjunct professor at MSU, visiting scientist at the University of Georgia, and as a surgeon at veterinary referral hospitals in the USA (Alaska, Virginia, Washington, DC., Nebraska) and Zurich, Switzerland. In 2018, he established Small Animal Surgery Locum, focusing on providing orthopedic locum surgery services to private practices and universities in North America and Europe. Since 2017, Dr. von Pfeil has been a faculty member of AOVet North America, and since 2011, he has contributed to the editorial boards of several international veterinary surgical journals.
His expertise is further evidenced by the development, presentation, and publication of multiple orthopedic surgical techniques. Dr. von Pfeil has contributed over 80 publications to the veterinary literature and has delivered more than 120 presentations worldwide. Despite his global professional engagements, he maintains a steadfast connection to the sport of sled dogs, returning annually to Alaska for the Iditarod Sled Dog race since 2007.
